Which mode should I use?
| Item | Apple on-device | Custom model |
|---|---|---|
| Where inference runs | Locally on a supported Apple device | At the model provider you choose |
| API key | Not required | You request and enter your own key |
| Network and data | Prompts and relevant local summaries are not sent to an external model provider; other app networking is not disabled | Your device connects over HTTPS to the endpoint you enter; the provider’s privacy policy applies |
| Cost | DayFlow AI does not charge an API fee; Apple controls device and system requirements | You settle charges with the provider; free tiers, trials and prices can change |
| Model choice | Provided by Apple’s system | You enter the model ID and choose OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic Messages |
| Requirements | Supported Apple Intelligence hardware, OS, language/region and a downloaded system model | A device running DayFlow AI with access to a compatible HTTPS endpoint |
1. Apple on-device models
On supported Apple devices, Apple Intelligence runs locally. The prompt and relevant local data summary for the request are not sent to DayFlow AI or an external model provider. This does not turn off unrelated app networking such as calendar sync or opening the website.
Requirements
- A device that supports Apple Intelligence. The current DayFlow AI native on-device module requires iOS 26 or later; iPhone 15 Pro and newer are the current practical hardware starting point, while Apple determines future support.
- For devices in mainland China, the current app guidance is iOS 26.4 or later. Actual availability also depends on Apple’s supported device, language and region matrix.
- Apple Intelligence enabled in Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri, with a supported system language and region.
- On first use, the system may download several GB of on-device model data over Wi‑Fi and power. Current testing used about 9.5 GB; Apple controls the actual size.
Setup and status
- Open DayFlow AI → Profile → AI Assistant → AI settings.
- Select Apple on-device. Endpoint, API key and model ID fields are not shown because this mode does not need them.
- Follow the status card: Ready can be tested; Apple Intelligence off requires enabling it in Settings; Downloading requires waiting on a network and power; Unsupported means you should check the device, OS and language or use Custom.
- When the status is Ready, tap Test connection. No API key application is needed.
2. Custom model
Custom means “bring your own provider”: choose a provider and model, request a key from that provider, then enter the endpoint, protocol, model ID and key in DayFlow AI. The current App Store build keeps only Apple on-device and Custom entry points; it does not include bundled cloud models, balance cards or in-app API purchases.
Supported protocols
- OpenAI-compatible: commonly
/v1/chat/completionswith anAuthorization: Bearerheader. - Anthropic Messages: commonly
/v1/messageswithx-api-keyandanthropic-version: 2023-06-01headers.
Base URLs, paths, model IDs and limits differ by provider. Follow the provider’s API documentation; a web chat URL is not an API endpoint.
How to request a free tier or trial API key
DayFlow AI does not promise a permanently free provider. A “free model” normally means a provider’s free quota, trial quota or limited model, and eligibility, region, rate limits and expiry can change.
- Choose a provider that supports OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic Messages requests and permits direct HTTPS access from mobile devices.
- Create an account on the provider’s website. Complete email, phone or identity verification if that provider requires it.
- Open its API Keys / Developer console and check the free or trial quota, supported models, rate limits and whether a payment method is required.
- Create a key dedicated to DayFlow AI. Paste it only into the app; never share it in chat, screenshots, support tickets or public repositories.
- In DayFlow AI, open Profile → AI Assistant → AI settings, select Custom, enter the endpoint, protocol, model ID and key, then tap Test connection.
- If the key is exposed, expires or is no longer needed, revoke it in the provider console, create a replacement and clear the old key in the app.
What to enter in the app
- Open Profile → AI Assistant → the gear icon, then select Custom.
- Endpoint: enter the API base URL supplied by the provider. Follow its path requirements and do not duplicate
/v1or/chat/completions. - Protocol: select the protocol the provider actually supports. A mismatch causes the connection test to fail.
- Model ID: use the exact ID from the provider’s API documentation, not just the display name.
- API key: enter the key you requested yourself. It is stored locally on the device; DayFlow AI does not collect or manage it for you.
- Tap Test connection; save and use the configuration after it succeeds.
Check these items before choosing a provider
- Whether it supports
/v1/chat/completionsor/v1/messages, and the exact base URL to enter. - Whether free quota is limited by model, region, time or rate, and whether overage can become paid automatically.
- Whether mobile direct access is allowed, extra headers are required, and requests are retained or used for training.
- Retention period, cross-border transfer, account security and API-key revocation procedures.
3. Data controls, cost and security
- Use my data on: attach the recent schedule, todos, running and ledger summaries needed for the request; off sends only your typed text and necessary conversation context.
- Confirmation: AI-created, changed or deleted schedule, todo and ledger items are shown in a preview; nothing is written until you confirm.
- Stop requests: clear the API key or switch to Apple on-device to stop future Custom requests. Data already sent remains subject to the provider’s policy.
- Cost: token charges, free quota and overage pricing are set by the provider. DayFlow AI does not collect, mark up or sell API credits in the app.
4. Troubleshooting
- Check the endpoint, protocol, model ID and API key; remove web-page URLs, duplicate paths and extra spaces.
- Confirm that the provider account still has free quota or paid quota, the model is available, and the device can reach the endpoint over HTTPS.
- For Anthropic, confirm Messages API support; for OpenAI-compatible, confirm Chat Completions support.
- For Apple on-device mode, check the device, iOS version, system language/region, Apple Intelligence switch and model download status.
Can Android use Apple on-device models?
No. Apple on-device models depend on Apple Intelligence and are limited to supported Apple devices. Android users should use Custom.
Does DayFlow AI collect my conversations?
Apple on-device requests are not sent to an external model provider. Custom requests go directly from your device to the endpoint you enter; DayFlow AI does not operate a relay. The provider may still process requests under its own privacy, training and retention terms. You can also clear local chat history in the AI assistant.
This page documents the current app configuration. It is not an endorsement, sale or promise of permanent free access from any model provider.
